While many businesses recognise the value of commercialising existing technologies into new applications, few actively pursue it, due to complexity, cost and confidence. to the absence of research and practical knowledge into how it actually works and even less guidance on how to do it well.

Natasha Allden, leads a PhD programme into why and how industry can identify, qualify and make confident decisions on the commercialisation of their existing innovations. The research studies the characteristics of technology and decision-drivers, delivering practical models that help businesses identify, design, and deliver successful transfer projects.

RESEARCH THEMES

AI-Enabled Decision Support: Our work explores the role of AI in supporting strategic evaluation, opportunity assessment, and evidence-based decision processes while maintaining transparency and human oversight.

Technology Transfer and Innovation Systems: The successful movement of knowledge and technology from one context to another remains one of the most significant challenges in innovation. We are interested in understanding how organisations identify opportunities, assess applicability, and accelerate adoption through more structured and data-driven approaches.

Data and Knowledge Architectures: Effective innovation relies on the ability to organise, connect, and interpret information. Our research explores data architectures, knowledge representation, and methods for transforming fragmented information into actionable insight.

Human-Centred AI: Technology is most effective when designed around the people who use it. We continue to explore approaches that balance technical capability with usability, explainability, and practical adoption within organisational environments.

PRACTICE – RESEARCH – PRACTICE LOOP

Much of our work originated from practical challenges encountered while designing and validating both service and technology solutions. The experience of building systems, engaging with stakeholders, and testing approaches in real-world contexts provides a valuable foundation for ongoing academic and applied research. Rather than viewing research and industry as separate disciplines, we believe the greatest value is created when insights flow between both.
