Imagine If…

MULTIPLY has evolved in 2022 like never before. We’ve transitioned to a social enterprise as recognised by Social Enterprise UK. We’ve commenced our landmark research programme into B2B technology transfer with QinetiQ and Cranfield University. We are on the journey toward building a sustainable, scalable and purpose led business that has a positive social and environmental impact globally.

So what? Why does this matter?

“The number of people living in absolute poverty is currently projected to rise from 11 million in 2021-22 to 14 million in 2023-24 – a rise from 17 to 21 per cent, including 30 per cent of children. Relative child poverty is projected to reach its highest level since the peaks of the 1990s.” Resolution Foundation, 2022 [1]

The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration for many, but for those living in poverty, it can be a difficult and challenging experience. In the United Kingdom, Christmas is one of the most expensive times of year due to high demand on items like food and presents. This often leaves people struggling to make ends meet throughout December.

Technology can have a profound impact on poverty reduction. The use of technology to improve access to basic services, create economic opportunities, and provide better education and health care is transforming lives around the world. In October this year know.space completed 13 case studies of technology transfer from ESA, demonstrating the power of technology to impact poverty reduction. Examples included reducing wastewater to solar power from a shipping container to power a village.

Imagine if we used technology transfer to take what we do on a day-to-day basis and apply it in environments that support social and environmental efforts? Imagine if we did this whilst generating revenue and de-risking organisations from the volatility of the market through an ever-increasing portfolio?

The reality is, we shouldn’t need to imagine anymore. We’ve seen the power of technology transfer not just here at MULTIPLY, but for many years in ESA, and at NASA, to make a difference to individual lives and this is why it matters.

As we look ahead to 2023, we look toward providing the knowledge, skills and confidence for industry to embark on their own technology transfer missions. The only imagining left to do is the imagining toward action. The actions we take to change future Christmases for every family.
